Programm:

Esa-Pekka SALONEN Violin Concerto

Jean SIBELIUS Lemminkäinen

The Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of its Music and Artistic  Director Tarmo Peltokoski, has prepared a concert programme that brings together two of  Finland's most outstanding composers of their respective eras. First, we have the father of  Finnish classical music, Jean Sibelius, and his symphonic suite Lemminkäinen, also known  as Four Legends from the Kalevala. This piece narrates Lemminkäinen's exploits in the  realm of the dead Tuonela, and his return among the living. We continue with one of  today's most eminent conductors and composers, Esa-Pekka Salonen. To perform the Violin  Concerto he completed in 2009, the orchestra will be accompanied by the young Finnish  violinist Tami Pohjola. According to the composer, this opus covers a wide range of  expressions, “from the virtuosic and flashy to the aggressive and brutal, from the  meditative and static to the nostalgic and autumnal”. Meanwhile, the final chord in this  score serves not only as a conclusion but also as the beginning of something new..
